Youth Mentoring
Mass Ingenuity believes in fostering organizations that provide role models and mentoring to youth in the communities we serve. Here is a brief list of organizations that we support.
Project POOCH, Inc.® provides opportunities for youth in corrections to develop the personal and vocational skills they will need to become responsible, productive members of the community. The program accomplishes this by teaching youth to care for and train shelter dogs for adoption.
For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people. Jim Clark is a board member of this fine organization.
FACES, founded in 2001, has performed hundreds of cleft lip and palate surgeries on medically isolated patients. But, we know that surgery alone is not enough to help our patients – they must also learn to speak after their surgery and post-op healing is complete. This is where our unique, technological connectivity comes into play. Using 3G, 4G and WiFi technology we connect with our patients abroad. Our highly trained speech therapists, based in Portland, Oregon, can connect with the patients in Peru through internet connections and video conferencing. Using the model we’ve created, we teach our patients how to make the sounds of speech with their tongue and mouth, a necessary step to help them function fully in their homes, families and communities. Being able to speak clearly and be understood, something many of us take for granted, gives our patients a new life and new opportunities. Wireless connectivity is overcoming medical isolation and international borders – using 3G/4G/WiFi connections, we are able to deliver complex services never before available to difficult to reach populations.
